This course delves into the critical exploration of cultural and philosophical theories that underpin the evolving landscape of computational media arts. It immerses students in relevant readings and discussions, providing them with a deep understanding of the complex interplay between the humanities, science, technology, culture, and the arts. Through the examination of key texts, critical debates and field trips (galleries and museums), students will engage with concepts that shape the field, such as digital aesthetics, media theory, media archaeology, cybernetics, posthumanism, and the impact of technology on our society.
The course is rooted in the recognition that computational media arts exist at the intersection of technology, culture, and human expression. In an era defined by AI and rapid technological advancements, artists in this field need a profound understanding of the cultural and philosophical dimensions that inform their practice. This course responds to the need for students to engage critically with the theoretical underpinnings of computational media arts, enabling them to navigate the complex terrain where technology shapes and is shaped by society and culture. By immersing students in readings and discussions, the course equips them with the intellectual foundation necessary to create meaningful, culturally resonant, and ethically informed computational artworks.
The primary objective of the course is to equip students with a comprehensive theoretical framework that deepens their understanding of the cultural, philosophical, and ethical dimensions of computational media arts. Through critical readings, discussions, and engagement with key concepts and debates, this course aims to broaden students' perspectives, encouraging them to critically reflect on the impact of technology on art, culture, society, and individual identity. The course empowers students to integrate theoretical insights into their creative practice, enabling them to create computational artworks that are not only technically proficient but also culturally meaningful and philosophically resonant. It seeks to cultivate artists who can navigate the complex interplay between technology and culture, contributing to the field with depth, thoughtfulness, and ethical awareness.
